Applications of CR39
- General use of CR39
The INTERCAST EUROPE CR39 is mainly used for sunglasses, ophtalmic lenses,
safety screens, observation windows (business machines, chemical equipment),
instrument and insulating windows.
- Scientific Use of CR39 as Nuclear Track Detector
Charged particles, passing trough the CR39 sheets, can damage the
polymeric bonds; it is possible to highlight this damage by an appropriate
chemical etching. The particle paths appear, after etching, like pits (or
holes). From the measurements of their base area and depth, the electric
charges and the energy loss of the particles is determined.
CR39 is used in Physics as nuclear track detector in different fields as for
example in heavy ion collision studies, for the detection of cosmic ray nuclei,
to search for magnetic monopoles.
The CR39 nuclear track detector can also used for radon and neutron
dosimetry. Measurements of the indoor radon concentrations using the
INTERCAST CR39 have been done in the Bologna Metropolitan area [1] and
in the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy [2] using
a dosimeter developped at ENEA.
